A 21-year-old robbery with violence suspect has been arrested in Kisumu after attacking and robbing a security guard at gunpoint.
In a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect, identified as Kelvin Oduor alias Kevoo, was found hiding inside a water storage drum on the rooftop of Patel Sarmaji Building, where officers also recovered an AK-47 rifle loaded with five rounds of ammunition.
According to the DCI, the arrest followed a swift response by Kisumu Sub-County Law Enforcement Officers who were on patrol when they heard gunshots in the area.
“The officers swiftly responded and upon arrival, established that the suspect had attacked a security guard, robbed him of his mobile phone and rubber shoes, before fleeing the scene,” the statement read.
Determined not to let the armed suspect escape, the officers launched an immediate pursuit that led them to the building where Oduor was hiding.
“Their efforts paid off when the suspect was discovered hiding inside a water storage drum on the rooftop of Patel Sarmaji Building,” the DCI added.
Upon searching the suspect, officers recovered an AK-47 assault rifle loaded with a magazine containing five rounds of live ammunition. The firearm is believed to have been used in the robbery.
“The suspect was arrested on the spot and escorted to Kisumu Central Police Station, where he is being processed pending arraignment in court,” the statement noted.
The DCI commended the quick response and bravery of the Kisumu Sub-County Law Enforcement Officers, whose timely intervention prevented further harm and led to the recovery of a dangerous weapon.
Authorities are now investigating how the suspect obtained the firearm and whether he is linked to other robberies reported in the region.
Police have assured members of the public that operations to rid Kisumu and its environs of armed criminals will continue, urging residents to share any information that may help in ongoing investigations.
